Tamboti Tented Camp

Overview

Tamboti Tented Camp is a small, characterful satellite camp perched above the Timbavati River near Orpen. It’s all about the bush vibe here: canvas, trees, and the soundtrack of lions at night and hyena padding past the fence. If you want a back‑to‑nature feel without pitching your own tent, this is one of the most atmospheric bases in the area.

Accommodation & Facilities

Tamboti is tents only, with a mix of standard safari tents and a subset of luxury/semi‑luxury units. Standard tents use shared ablutions and communal kitchens; upgraded tents add private en‑suite bathrooms and kitchenettes for a smoother self‑catering setup. All units are geared for self‑catering, and housekeeping services the tents. Around camp you’ll find two communal kitchens (hot plates and 24‑hour boiling water), two ablution blocks, a communal boma/braai area, and a bird hide tucked inside camp for quiet viewing.

What Tamboti does not have: a shop, restaurant, ATM, or its own reception. You’ll handle check‑in and pick up supplies at Orpen Rest Camp a few minutes away.

Wildlife & Game Viewing

This corner of Kruger consistently produces. Expect the usual plains game along the Orpen–Satara corridor—zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, impala, warthog, and elephant—with real chances at lion, leopard, and cheetah along the Timbavati routes. Around camp, night visitors like hyena, genet, and even honey badger are reported, and the bird hide adds easy, low‑effort viewing between drives.

Do secure food: baboons and vervet monkeys work the camp and will raid anything left unattended. Use the provided bins/cages and keep tents zipped.

Logistics

• Location: roughly 2–4 km from Orpen Gate/Rest Camp (about 10 minutes inside the park).
• Getting there: from Gauteng via the N4 > R540 (Belfast) > R36 (via Lydenburg) > R531 to Orpen Gate; allow 4–5 hours to the gate, then a short drive to camp.
• Check‑in/out: check‑in 14:00–17:00; check‑out 10:00.

Best Time to Visit

Tamboti is about immersion rather than big‑camp bustle, so it shines when you settle in for at least a night to enjoy the evening and pre‑dawn bush soundtrack. Plan your arrival within the check‑in window, and use Tamboti as a springboard for drives along the productive Orpen–Satara routes.
