About Windsong Wilderness Retreat
Why stop
- A 16-foot motorboat comes with the cabin
Heads up
- Remote, seasonal access takes advance planning
The cabin is set up for self-catering, with a propane stove, utensils, propane refrigerator, firewood for heat, and a cabin-size water filter. A 16-foot motorboat with an outboard and a wood-burning sauna are also provided. Potable water isn't confirmed for the cabin-size filter, so check your water plan before traveling. Ask about meals when you book instead of assuming they're included.

Where it is

The highest, rockiest slopes around here are a summer buffet for grizzly bears.

A cabin on Upper Twin LakeWindsong Wilderness Retreat is a private log cabin on the opposite shore of Upper Twin Lake…
Windsong Wilderness Retreat is a private log cabin on the opposite shore of Upper Twin Lake from the Richard Proenneke Historic Site. It sleeps up to four guests. I'd choose it for an overnight stay when time on the lake and the Twin Lakes backcountry is the point; this isn't a quick roadside stop.
Plan for a remote arrivalThe Twin Lakes area is roadless.
The Twin Lakes area is roadless. The retreat can help arrange air transportation with a local charter, so sort out flights and arrival logistics before booking. Rentals are seasonal in summer; confirm current dates with the retreat before planning.
The Proenneke connectionThe separate historic site lies across the lake.
The separate historic site lies across the lake. Richard Proenneke arrived at Twin Lakes in 1968, built his cabin at 51, and lived there for more than 30 years. Sam Keith's One Man's Wilderness, drawn from Proenneke's journals, was first published in 1973. Windsong sits opposite that site, but it's a private rental, not the separate historic-site cabin.
