The castle sits in 77 acres of historic gardens, lawns, and woodland on a steep-sided site above the Esk valley. Paths lead through cultivated areas, ravines, play areas, and the Enchanted Trail. In spring, rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias, native daffodils, and bluebells are the main event. May is usually the strongest month for the flowering gardens, while the bluebell woods are best from roughly mid-April into mid-May.
The Hawk & Owl Centre adds a completely different reason to visit. Its flying displays feature owls, falcons, eagles, and vultures, including critically endangered hooded vultures. The castle’s long history includes a later-13th-century castle and a 19th-century redesign by Anthony Salvin; local legend and the house’s own ghost stories are part of the atmosphere, whether or not you believe them.
