Overview

About Wast Water

Why stop

  • The Screes drop dramatically into the lake
  • Big mountain reflections from an easy roadside stop

Heads up

  • Narrow roads and crowded shore access on bright summer days
Wast Water is England's deepest lake, reaching 79 metres in the bottom of the Wasdale valley. The setting is unusually concentrated: the dark water runs beneath the steep Wasdale Screes, while Great Gable, Kirk Fell, Yewbarrow, Lingmell, and Scafell Pike close in the surrounding skyline.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Early morning or late afternoon usually gives the best reflections and softer light on the surrounding slopes. Weekdays are your best chance of a quieter visit, while bright summer weekends and school holidays can bring heavy traffic and parked cars through the narrow valley. Low cloud is common and can hide the high fells, but it often makes the Screes feel even more dramatic.

The National Trust's Lake Head car park has an accessible toilet block and drinking water. The toilets are composting or pit-style rather than a conventional running-water restroom. Facilities are limited away from Lake Head, so bring food, water, waterproof layers, and shoes with reliable grip if you plan to walk beyond the immediate viewpoint.

More about Wast Water

What to expectThis is a landscape stop rather than a single paved attraction.

This is a landscape stop rather than a single paved attraction. The lake is long and irregular, with access spread among roadside viewpoints, pull-ins, car parks, and paths around Wasdale. The road toward Wasdale Head is narrow and single-track in places. Use designated parking, never block gates or passing places, and give walkers, cyclists, and farm traffic room.

Lake Head is the most useful base for the Wasdale side of the lake and for longer walks toward Scafell Pike. Overbeck and Nether Wasdale provide other approaches, but they are separate access points rather than one continuous lakeside promenade. Expect rougher ground, wet weather, and exposed fell conditions once you leave the road or low shore.

Water, wildlife, and careWast Water is a deep, oligotrophic lake and a protected Special Area of Conservation.

Wast Water is a deep, oligotrophic lake and a protected Special Area of Conservation. The surrounding fells also support important wildlife habitats. This is a place to enjoy quietly: keep dogs close around livestock and wildlife, take all litter away, and do not climb onto unstable-looking scree slopes.

The lake is open water, not a supervised beach. If you plan to get in or take a boat, check the current local arrangements first and bring suitable cold-water safety equipment. The water can look calm while the weather on the surrounding fells is turning.

The classic view is from the southwestern end, near the youth hostel, looking up the lake toward Great Gable. It is the kind of landscape that works even when you only have a few minutes, but it also rewards a slower stop to watch the light move across the fells and the reflections change.
