Birker Fell: Green Crag’s Open-Fell Loop

Overview

About Green Crag from Birker Fell

This is a 4.1-mile (6.6 km) loop from an informal pull-in on Birker Fell Road, measured as the complete circuit. It climbs across open moorland to Great Crag and Broad Crag, reaches Green Crag, then returns by a slightly different line. Allow about three hours, not the under-two-hour minimum sometimes quoted, because the rough ground and navigation slow you down.

Why go

  • quiet fell walk
  • big summit views

Heads up

  • pathless bog
  • limited parking
  • poor mist navigation
Green Crag is a modest summit with an outsized view. From the top, the Scafell range and upper Eskdale fill the northern skyline, while Harter Fell, the Duddon fells, and the coast open out in other directions. The approach across the rough moorland and the close views of Great Crag and Broad Crag are part of the experience, not just filler before the summit. Clear weather and low-angle morning or late-afternoon light show the rock and heather at their best.

Parking

Use the informal roadside pull-in on Birker Fell Road at OS grid reference SD1769708, near Winds Gate. There is no dedicated car park and space is limited to a few rough roadside areas; do not confuse the starting pull-in with the Green Crag summit listing.

Safety

The route crosses pathless, very boggy open fell and includes minor scrambling among the crags. In mist or low cloud, navigation is difficult. Avoid the deep peat hollow near the start because its undercut banks can be dangerous for dogs and children. Livestock roam the area, so keep dogs under close control.

Hiking Green Crag from Birker Fell

What the walk is likeThe opening section is a short, pathless crossing of fell grass and bog toward the crags.

The opening section is a short, pathless crossing of fell grass and bog toward the crags. Sheep trods sometimes make the going easier, but they are not reliable route markers. The line then threads between rocky outcrops and up Green Crag's grassy side. There is a little scrambling around the crags, but no sustained technical climbing. Expect tussocks, wet hollows, heather, and a trail that can disappear altogether.

Planning and navigationThis is a quiet, niche fell walk rather than a polished path.

This is a quiet, niche fell walk rather than a polished path. The ground is famously boggy in wet weather and can be tiring even when the ascent is gradual. Do not start in mist or low cloud unless you are comfortable navigating open fell terrain; the return is less obvious than the outward line. Spring through autumn is the practical season, with heather colour later in summer and no dependable shade or facilities along the route. There is no identified trail permit requirement.

Dogs and livestockDogs may use the route, but this is open grazing land.

Dogs may use the route, but this is open grazing land. Keep them close and under control around sheep and cattle, and follow any seasonal short-lead requirement for open-access land. A deep peat hollow near the opening section can hold water behind undercut banks, so keep dogs and small children away from it.
