Overview

About Aira Force

Why stop

  • Waterfall, bridges, and lush gorge in one memorable stop
  • Easy to extend the visit to Gowbarrow and Ullswater views

Heads up

  • Car parks fill during peak periods
  • Steep, uneven steps can be slippery after rain
Aira Force is a 65-foot (20m) waterfall where Aira Beck drops through a narrow, fern-covered gorge above Ullswater. The waterfall is the focal point, but the setting is what makes the visit work: stone bridges, mossy rock, rushing cascades, and an old pleasure-ground landscape planted with impressive specimen trees.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Arrive early or visit on a weekday if you want a better chance of parking and a quieter walk. Aira Force is popular, and the main car park can fill during busy periods; other National Trust car parks serve the wider area, but they do not all put you equally close to the waterfall.

Rain usually makes the falls louder and more impressive. On a bright morning, spray can produce a rainbow in the gorge, while dappled light works well in the woods later in the day. Carry waterproofs and shoes with good grip even when the forecast looks settled, and give yourself extra time if you plan to add Gowbarrow rather than turning around at the main viewpoint.

The main Aira Force car park is the useful arrival point, with a short walk through the woodland to the waterfall and viewing areas. The route includes steps and uneven ground, with an optional lower bridge and viewing platform. Continue through the High Cascades and the visit becomes a longer walk; the full Aira Force and Gowbarrow loop is about 4.5 miles (7.2km) and takes roughly 1½ to 3 hours, ending with broad views over Ullswater from Gowbarrow.

The main car park has toilets, accessible parking, picnic space, drinking-water taps, and a tea-room serving drinks, snacks, and ice cream. The waterfall itself is not wheelchair or pushchair accessible. Paths near the car park are better surfaced, but the gorge and the higher loop become steep, narrow, and rugged. A baby carrier is more practical than a pushchair, and sturdy footwear is important.

The surrounding National Trust land is an 18th-century pleasure ground with woodland paths, open glades, and lakeshore access. William Wordsworth used Aira Force as the backdrop for his poem Somnambulist. Look quietly in the trees for red squirrels, especially away from the busiest paths, and keep dogs on leads because the area includes livestock and ground-nesting birds.
