Wordsworth Grasmere: Inside Dove Cottage

Overview

About Wordsworth Grasmere

Why stop

  • A rare, intimate look at Wordsworth's home and working world
  • The garden and Viewing Station connect the exhibits to the vale

Heads up

  • Some garden and woodland paths are steep or uneven
Wordsworth Grasmere brings several different experiences into one stop: Dove Cottage, the Wordsworth Museum, the Garden-Orchard, Woodland, and a Viewing Station above the vale. The cottage is the reason to come. William Wordsworth and his family lived here from 1799 to 1808, when he was writing some of his best-known poetry and Dorothy Wordsworth was keeping her Grasmere journal. The rooms are small and atmospheric, so the visit feels personal rather than grand.

Plan your stop

Before you go

Best time to go

Go on a weekday morning or late afternoon for a calmer feel around the cottage and better chances of quiet in the garden. Overcast or rainy weather is no reason to skip it because much of the visit is indoors, while clearer early or late light gives the Garden-Orchard and Viewing Station more shape for photographs. Give yourself extra time in spring and summer if you want to linger outside, and remember that the cottage visit is the only timed part of the experience.

More about Wordsworth Grasmere

What you will seeThe introductory visit to Dove Cottage is timed, then you can explore at your own pace.

The introductory visit to Dove Cottage is timed, then you can explore at your own pace. In the Museum, handwritten manuscripts, journals, letters, and personal items explain the Wordsworths' creative life. Hands-on features such as a working printing press and quill-and-ink writing make it easier to connect the literary history with an actual place, especially for families.

Allow two to three hours if you want to do the cottage, Museum, gardens, and Viewing Station without rushing. The Garden-Orchard changes with the seasons, from spring bluebells to winter snowdrops, and the Woodland is a good place to slow down after the indoor exhibits. The final view across Grasmere Vale is the payoff that ties the house to the landscape that shaped the Wordsworths' work.

Practical planningThis is a popular attraction, and the on-site pay-and-display car park can fill on busy days.

This is a popular attraction, and the on-site pay-and-display car park can fill on busy days. Arrive early or later in the afternoon, and allow time to find overflow parking in Grasmere if needed. The site is on the A591 south of the village, with bus services stopping close by. A café, shop, toilets, and accessible facilities are available on site, and the café can be visited without entering the paid attraction.

The Museum, Café, and Viewing Station have lift access. Most wheelchairs can use the ground floor of Dove Cottage, but the historic cottage's upstairs rooms are reached by stairs. Parts of the Garden-Orchard and Woodland are steep or uneven, so check the access information if mobility is a concern. Bring a light waterproof layer and comfortable shoes; even a short garden visit is exposed to Lake District weather.
