Fort William Henry Museum

Fort William Henry Museum is a reconstructed British fort and living-history museum at the south end of Lake George. The reconstructed fort spans 45,000 square feet across three levels, with exhibits, costumed interpreters, and timed musket and cannon demonstrations telling the story of the 1757 siege. Keep it high on your list if you like history you can walk through; just know the walls are a 1950s reconstruction, not surviving 1750s buildings. Admission includes two consecutive days with re-entry, so you can split the visit if you would rather take it slowly.

The standard visit is self-guided, with a map and optional audio app; scheduled interpretive talks may end with musket and cannon fire. The living-history season is seasonal, so check current dates and the day’s schedule before you go, then work the talks into your walk. Firing is loud and weather-dependent. About 80% of the exhibits are indoors, but you move outside between buildings. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are allowed during the daytime visit, though the noise may bother them.

Provincial commander William Johnson came to the southern end of Lac du Saint Sacrament in 1755, renamed it Lake George, and began the fort as an advance base against French positions and to protect the water route between New York City and Montreal. Engineer William Eyre used a Vauban-style plan: log-faced, earth-filled walls about 30 feet thick, a dry moat on three sides, and the lake-side slope as a natural defense. The fort could house 400 to 500 men, with an entrenched camp to its east.

After six days of siege, Lt. Col. George Monro surrendered on August 9, 1757, after General Webb’s relief failed to arrive from Fort Edward. The agreed evacuation broke down after a dispute over promised plunder, followed by attacks on the fort’s sick and wounded and on the departing column. Estimates vary, but about 200 people were killed or wounded. It is a grim chapter and a central one to the site’s story.

The fort was burned after the siege. Its site lay untouched until local businessmen bought the land in the 1950s to protect it from development, then excavated and rebuilt the fort on its original footprint using the original plans. You are seeing a modern reconstruction over the historic site, not the original timber fort.
