Prospect Mountain Summit

Prospect Mountain Summit is a 2,030-foot peak above Lake George. For the easiest approach, take the seasonal Veterans Memorial Highway and park at the upper lot; the last 0.2 mile climbs 155 feet to the top. It is short, but steep enough to surprise anyone expecting a drive-up viewpoint. The 5.5-mile highway has three roadside vistas along the way. A separate hiking route from Lake George Village is roughly three miles round trip over steep, rocky ground. No current summit shuttle was confirmed, so plan on the walk from the upper lot and check road access before making the drive.

At the summit, the view opens 360 degrees. On a clear day, the horizon can include Vermont’s Green Mountains, the Adirondack High Peaks, New Hampshire’s White Mountains and, in especially clear conditions, Canada’s Laurentian Mountains. Lake George and its tree-covered slopes fill the foreground. For a photo, keep some of that forest below the skyline; it helps show the lake’s scale and the distance to the ridges. The roadside vistas add stops, but the summit is the broad panorama to plan around.

Visitors came for the summit long before the highway. In 1877, Dr. James Ferguson bought the mountain, renamed it Mount Ferguson and built a hotel at the top that he promoted as a sanitarium for pulmonary illness. It burned three years later. A rebuilt hotel became Prospect Mountain House, and William Peck later added a restaurant and dance hall. The summit was once a resort, not just a lookout.

An inclined cable railway opened in 1895 and stopped running in 1903. The remains of that old ascent are part of the mountain’s story. The Veterans Memorial Highway opened in 1969, giving visitors a road to the upper parking area and replacing the railway as the easiest way up.

Picnic tables and grills sit near the summit, with a rentable pavilion. For a meal or supplies, Lake George Village is the nearby option. The lower day-use area has a wheelchair-accessible viewing area and restroom; those facilities are below the separate uphill summit path. Pets are prohibited at this state day-use site.
