Charles R. Wood Park

Charles R. Wood Park is a 12.5-acre village park at the south end of Lake George. Its 2.5-acre Festival Commons lawn shares the grounds with a children’s adventure playground, skate park, interactive water feature and West Brook environmental paths. The Commons has views toward Lake George, but the park itself sits close to the water rather than on the shoreline. I’d stop for family play or a festival; pair it with a waterfront visit if the lake is what you came for.

Festival Commons hosts live music and performing arts, reenactments, craft and farmers markets, vehicle and boat shows, and seasonal festivals. Some events are free and others charge admission. Check the event details before you go: adjacent event parking can require a separate permit and fee, and food vendors depend on the event rather than a regular café.

West Brook was a major route for stormwater pollution into Lake George’s Southern Basin. Earlier studies attributed about half of the contaminants entering that basin to the brook. The restoration sends runoff through ponds, vegetated swales, gravel and deeper wetlands to slow and filter it before it reaches the lake. Paths let you walk through this working system, so the environmental area is part of the visit rather than just landscaping around the event lawn.

Before the Commons and wetland park, this was the site of Gaslight Village, a family amusement park associated with Charles R. Wood. It closed in 1989, and the present park was dedicated in Wood’s name. Local governments bought the parcels in 2008 as the conservation project took shape, giving the former amusement-park site a second life as public recreation space and stormwater protection.
