“Ticonderoga's industrial story starts with falling water. The La Chute drops more than two hundred feet between Lake George and Lake Champlain, giving mills a power source close to town.”

Hancock House Museum is a four-story regional history museum in Ticonderoga, set inside a Georgian Revival stone building. Its collections cover the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain and Lake George regions, including local social, scientific and cultural history alongside the area’s military past. It’s a good stop if you want a wider story than forts and battlefields alone. The exhibits span several levels, so stairs are part of the visit.

The museum follows a seasonal schedule, so check its open days before planning a detour. Use the Wicker Street parking lot identified for museum visitors. There is no elevator: stairs connect the four floors. The lower-level program room is wheelchair accessible, though the galleries are not fully accessible.

Regional history, Abenaki life, Rogers’ Rangers, canals and wool appear among the second-floor subjects, alongside the Harmon Gallery. The third floor turns to folk art and local firefighting. The basement program room holds a large illustrated battle map.

One exhibit reconstructs a short Abenaki longhouse and pairs it with tools and artifacts about daily life. An Abenaki tribal member helped develop the display, giving it a perspective beyond the military history that dominates many Ticonderoga stops.

The basement’s Clegg mural is a 4-by-8-foot illustrated map of important battlefields in Vermont and northeastern New York. Horace A. Moses commissioned it for the museum’s 1926 opening, and English artist Ernest Clegg made it. After decades in off-site storage, it was returned and restored; its scenes span the French and Indian Wars, the American Revolution and the War of 1812.

The Ticonderoga building was constructed in 1925 and opened in 1926 as a representation of a Georgian Hancock residence on Boston’s Beacon Hill. Architect John Hubbard Sturgis made measured drawings of the Boston house before it was demolished in 1863, and those plans informed the Ticonderoga design. Horace A. Moses gave the museum building to the New York State Historical Association; the Ticonderoga Historical Society took over its stewardship in 1975.

Weymouth granite blocks cover the exterior, matching stone used on the Boston model and helping make the Ticonderoga building largely fire resistant. For an exterior photo, step back across the lawn far enough to fit the steep roof, dormers and chimney row with the stone walls.
