“Glasgow's drinking water has traveled from Loch Katrine since eighteen fifty-nine, when Queen Victoria opened the first aqueduct. Here's the clever part: the water drops only about one metre in every six kilometres.”

Loch Chon Campsite is a small, 26-pitch tent campground on the shore of Loch Chon, tucked among woodland and open grassy pitches beside the minor B829 between Kinlochard and Inversnaid. It suits campers who want a simple base for paddling, swimming and exploring the Trossachs, not a full-service holiday park. The setting feels remote once you're among the trees, though you can drive to the entrance.

Each pitch has a designated parking space, with toilets, drinking water and shared washing-up areas on site. Fire bowls are provided and firewood can be booked ahead. There are no showers or motorhome pitches, and gear may need to be carried up to 150 metres from the parking spaces. Two pitches have accessible toilets and nearby designated parking, but some paths include short flights of steps. Dogs are welcome; hammocks aren't.

Book ahead rather than treating it as a drop-in stop: stays are limited to three nights, and camping in the lochshore management zones from 1 March to 30 September requires a campsite booking or permit. The loch is the main extra: kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and open-water swimming are all part of the appeal. I'd choose it for the woodland-and-water setting and basic, peaceful camping; skip it if you need showers or a motorhome hookup.
