Nordenskiöld Site #16 Overlook

Nordenskiöld Site #16 Overlook is a viewpoint on Wetherill Mesa looking across Rock Canyon to a cliff dwelling of about 50 rooms. If Mesa Verde’s alcove sites are high on your list, this is a worthwhile stop. It’s a moderate, roughly 2-mile round trip from Wetherill Pavilion, and the return climbs; think of it as an exposed hike, not a roadside pullout.

Start south on the gravel path from the Wetherill kiosk, then turn right where the Nordenskiöld Site #16 Trail is signed. The route gains about 95 feet, but there’s no shade or water access, so carry water and plan for the sun. Pets are allowed on leash; bring water for them too. At Wetherill Pavilion, a seasonal snack bar sells pre-packaged food and drinks, so pick something up before setting out.

The dwelling has about 50 rooms beneath a sandstone overhang in Rock Canyon. Swedish scholar Gustaf Nordenskiöld excavated the site in 1891, and it bears his name. Across Wetherill Mesa, the archaeological sites trace nearly 700 years of Ancestral Pueblo life.

At the overlook, include the rooms and the long, layered alcove around them. That shows how the dwelling fits under the cliff; a tight crop of the masonry loses the setting that makes this view distinctive.

Wetherill Mesa is reached by a very winding, 12-mile road that takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes from its junction. Vehicles over 25 feet long or 8,000 pounds aren’t allowed. The area is seasonal and opening dates change each year, so check access before making the drive. Bicycles and e-bikes are not allowed on Wetherill Road, though they can be ridden on trails beyond the pavilion.
