Pleasant Flat Campsite

Overview

Set in a wide valley beside State Highway 6, Pleasant Flat is a classic DOC roadside stop: big mountain vistas toward Mt Hooker, a short bush walk, and the Haast River just behind camp. It’s scenic and straightforward—great for an overnight on the Haast Pass corridor if you’re okay with basic facilities and the notorious sandflies.

What You’ll Find

• Large, mostly grassy, unpowered sites with space for tents and vehicles.
• Toilets, a water supply (treat/boil if not signed as treated), picnic tables, and a simple cooking shelter.
• Short bush walk to a pretty stream and easy access for river picnics or a bit of fishing.
• No dogs and a total fire ban.

Reviews are consistent: the setting is lovely, the bugs are relentless. Expect a convenient highway stop with mountain views rather than a secluded backcountry feel. It can fill up in peak season and cleanliness of the loos depends on how busy it’s been.

Fees and Booking

DOC lists this as a Standard campsite: adults NZ$15/night, children (5–17) NZ$7.50, infants free. The DOC Campsite Pass is accepted. Book online before occupying a site; if staff book you on arrival there’s a service fee. Sites are chosen/allocated on arrival.

Wildlife and Pesky Critters

Sandflies are the headline here—cover up, use strong repellent, and keep doors/screens closed. Wind helps. A few visitors have even reported the odd mouse nosing around vans at night.

Best Time to Visit

Late November through March is the busy window. For softer light on the peaks, evenings can be gorgeous, but that’s also prime sandfly time—midday on a breezy day is the most comfortable. Arrive by mid‑afternoon in peak season to snag a level spot.
