Pros & cons
PROS
- Wide, scenic river-terrace views in the West Matukituki Valley
- Useful waypoint between Aspiring Hut and Pearl Flat for Liverpool/French Ridge routes
CONS
- No facilities of any kind
- DOC advises not to camp here due to avalanche debris reaching the valley floor
Overview
Shovel Flat is a broad, open terrace on the West Matukituki Track—more a scenic waypoint than a destination. It sits between Aspiring Hut and Pearl Flat, where parties branch to the Liverpool and French Ridge tracks. It’s pretty and practical, but not a campsite: DOC warns that avalanche debris can reach the valley floor here, so don’t pitch a tent.
Getting There
From Raspberry Creek car park it’s about 9 km (2–2.5 hours) to Aspiring Hut on easy valley travel, then roughly another 5 km (about 1.5 hours) toward Pearl Flat—Shovel Flat is in between. In good conditions, expect 3–3.5 hours one way to reach Shovel Flat from Raspberry Creek. The car park lies about 54 km west of Wānaka; the final ~30 km are gravel, with several unbridged fords in the last stretch that can be impassable after heavy rain. If in doubt, you can park before the last two fords and walk the remaining few hundred metres. Shuttle services operate in summer.
What You’ll See
The valley opens out here: tussocky flats, braided river views, and big mountain walls. Kea sometimes roam the area—clever, curious, and cheeky—so keep your gear secured. Expect sandflies around Aspiring Hut.
Safety and Hazards
DOC highlights avalanche hazard from roughly May to November in this valley, and specifically advises against camping at Shovel Flat because debris can reach the flats. Avalanche danger can linger into early summer. Weather shifts fast year‑round; rain can swell fords quickly. There’s private farmland along the approach—stay on the marked track and respect gates. Swing bridges have posted capacity limits; wait your turn. Rockfall has been noted near Wishbone Falls—pass with care.
Nearby Routes
From Pearl Flat you can climb toward Liverpool Hut or tackle the steep climbers’ track to French Ridge. A small rock biv (Scotts Rock Biv) sits upstream from the sidle track junction, marked by a cairn.
Facilities and Where to Overnight Instead
Shovel Flat has no toilets, shelter, water supply, or tent pads. The nearest facilities are at Aspiring Hut (flush toilets) and Raspberry Creek car park (long‑drop toilets and a shelter). If you’re camping, use the nearby Aspiring Campsite beside Aspiring Hut; it’s first‑come, first‑served, paid at the Tititea/Mount Aspiring Visitor Centre. Campers can use the toilets and the open‑sided shelter but not hut facilities.
Best Time to Visit
For ease and minimal avalanche risk, the prime window is typically December–April, though early summer can still see hazard—check the forecast and advisory before you go. Light is nicest on the flats early or late in the day, and foot traffic is moderate as most walkers are passing through.
