Top Forks Hut

Overview

Top Forks Hut is a classic backcountry stop near the head of the Wilkin Valley, serving trampers on the Gillespie Pass Circuit and Wilkin Valley routes. It’s simple, social, and scenic—the kind of hut where route-finding tales and weather chats fill the evening around the wood burner.

What the Hut Offers

• 16 bunks with mattresses in a serviced hut setup.
• Heating via a wood burner; bring your own fire starter and matches.
• Toilets outside; rainwater collected from the roof into a tank.
• You must bring a sleeping bag, stove and fuel, cookware/utensils, toilet paper, a rubbish bag (pack everything out), and a torch/headlamp.

Fees & How Payment Works

Adults pay per night, with discounted rates for youth and infants free. Either drop serviced hut tickets in the hut’s honesty box or use a Backcountry Hut Pass for 12 months of access at most serviced and standard huts.

Access & Time on Foot

Reaching Top Forks Hut is a solid backcountry effort. From Kerin Forks Hut it’s roughly 7–10 hours up the Wilkin Valley tracks. It also links naturally with the Gillespie Pass Circuit and the Wilkin–East Matukituki traverse.

Seasonality & Crowds

It’s popular from December until after Easter. In peak season, carry a tent or at least a roll mat in case the bunks are taken.

A Note on the “Old” Hut

An older adjacent hut was rebuilt in late 2019 around its original fireplace, and a deck now links the two structures. It’s a neat bit of hut history that adds character to the site.

Best Time to Visit

Shoulder seasons outside the December–Easter rush are the sweet spot for space. Start early for the long valley approach, and aim to arrive by late afternoon—good light on the surrounding peaks and less stress about bed space.
