Hozomeen Campground is a 75-site campground in forest near the north end of Ross Lake. It's a remote base for boating, fishing and nearby hikes, rather than an easy drive-through stop.
Sites are first-come, first-served, and NPS lists no camping fee. There are seasonal vault toilets and potable water, picnic tables, fire grates and boat ramps. There's no cell signal, trash service or campground store. Bring the food and supplies you need, and pack out your trash.
From British Columbia, the Silver-Skagit Road is a 37-mile gravel route from near Hope to Hozomeen; its availability changes with the season and road conditions. From the south, the U.S.-side approaches are by boat on Ross Lake or along the 31-mile East Bank Trail, a multi-day hike. Reaching Hozomeen by boat from Colonial Creek involves crossing five miles of Diablo Lake and portaging around Ross Dam. Check current road and access conditions before setting out.
Hozomeen comes from a Salish word meaning “sharp like a knife,” a reference to the peaks and to chert, a rock used for sharp-edged tools. The campground had grown to 72 sites by the mid-1970s. Park planners considered expanding boating and camping facilities here, including a possible ferry terminal; today's NPS inventory lists 75 sites.
