Ladder Creek Falls

Ladder Creek Falls is a 0.4-mile loop behind Gorge Powerhouse in Upper Newhalem, weaving between a narrow waterfall gorge and a landscaped garden. It makes a good short stop if you want more than a roadside view: the route combines the falls, garden paths, river crossings, and a piece of the Skagit hydroelectric story.

Start from the parking lot across the river from the powerhouse. The route crosses a suspension footbridge, passes the falls and garden, then returns on a walkway along an old railroad bridge. The loop includes steep steps with handrails, so it is not a step-free stroll.

By the 1930s, the garden was known for its exotic flowers. It was part of the Skagit hydroelectric project’s public showcase, where visitors could see the project’s powerhouses alongside the surrounding landscape. Greenhouse care became difficult during World War II staffing shortages, and many of the exotic flowers were lost; pools and bridges remain part of the garden setting.

The waterfall gets a light display after dark, using LED lights installed in 2011. That gives this short stop a different feel once the garden is lit. Bring a flashlight for the steps; the National Park Service advises one for the trail at night.

For a photo, leave some of the moss-covered rock walls around the white water. The narrow gorge is what gives the falls their shape, and a tight crop of water alone loses that setting.
