Ross Lake Overlook

Ross Lake Overlook is a roadside viewpoint around mile 136 of the North Cascades Highway, with a few pullouts in the same short stretch. You can step out for a no-hike look toward Ross Lake and the mountains beyond. It's a worthwhile quick break if you're already crossing the park; don't make it the day's main viewpoint. Trees screen much of the water, so this is a smaller, more enclosed view than Diablo Lake Overlook a few miles south.

The lake winds below forested slopes, with mountain walls behind it. The pullouts don't all have the same sightline, and the trees can leave you with only part of the water in view. If you're taking a photo, keep some of the ridge and trees in the frame instead of zooming tightly into the lake; they give the view its scale. Interpretive panels here cover glaciers, lakes, and the region's fire lookouts.

Ross Lake is a roughly 22-mile hydroelectric reservoir. Ross Dam was dedicated in 1940 and raised to 540 feet in 1949; it is part of the Skagit River system that supplies power to Seattle. The long, narrow waterway below the highway is both a mountain view and working infrastructure.

Long before the dam, the Cordilleran ice sheet pushed down the Skagit valley from British Columbia, widening the valley and rounding its ridges. The last ice in the upper valley had melted away by about 14,000 years ago. The lake now fills that older glacial landscape.

Treat this as a brief pullout stop, not a destination with a large parking lot or trail approach. State Route 20 is a warm-season road and typically closes in winter; opening and closing dates vary with snow and conditions. Check the current road status before you plan around the crossing.
