More about Ponderosa Camp

What you are bookingPonderosa Camp is a two-site boat-in campground on Ross Lake, listed as a group site.

Ponderosa Camp is a two-site boat-in campground on Ross Lake, listed as a group site. It sits about 11 miles from both Ross Dam and Hozomeen, so this is a planned overnight rather than a roadside break. Ross Lake is a reservoir created by the Skagit Hydroelectric Project, not a natural lake.

Plan the boat tripFrom the south, reaching Ross Lake means launching at Colonial Creek, boating about five miles…

From the south, reaching Ross Lake means launching at Colonial Creek, boating about five miles across Diablo Lake, and portaging boats and gear around Ross Dam on a roughly one-mile road. Ponderosa is another 11 miles from the dam. A backcountry permit is required year-round. No dock is listed for Ponderosa, so check landing conditions and lake levels before you go.

Set up for a remote nightRoss Lake's boat-in camps have fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets and bear-resistant food…

Ross Lake's boat-in camps have fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilets and bear-resistant food lockers. There is no potable-water supply listed, so bring drinking water or treat water drawn from the lake or nearby streams. Keep food, garbage and scented items in the locker when you are not actively cooking. The reservoir is usually high from late June through mid-September; drawdowns outside that period expose rocks and snags in the water.
