Reaching the Upper Queets means more than 11 winding miles on forestry roads, where logging traffic may be present. The route isn’t suitable for trailers or large RVs. Some visitors report that navigation apps misroute drivers and cell signal is absent, so download the route before leaving.

Salmon shape the valleyFive Pacific salmon species, including steelhead, spawn in the Queets River.

Five Pacific salmon species, including steelhead, spawn in the Queets River. Their post-spawning remains carry marine nutrients into the streamside forest and feed wildlife, from winter wrens and raccoons to otters, eagles and bears. The salmon return also has enduring cultural meaning: tribal members continue to honor it through First Salmon traditions.

A little farther up the valleyThe campground is one of the Queets area’s boat-launch points.

The campground is one of the Queets area’s boat-launch points. The Sam’s River Loop and Queets River Trail begin at the end of Upper Queets Road. About 2.4 miles up the valley, a 0.2-mile rainforest spur reaches the remains of a Douglas-fir that was once among the park’s largest. Look for elk beneath moss-draped bigleaf maples and tall Sitka spruce, and for salmon spawning in a side channel.
