Dolphin Research Center

Dolphin Research Center is an open-air marine-mammal education and research facility on Grassy Key. Walk the paths around saltwater lagoons to see dolphins and California sea lions, then add presentations or animal-care sessions to understand what you are seeing. You can watch the animals without booking an in-water encounter, but this is a managed-animal attraction, not a wild-dolphin trip. Go if you want a close look at animal care and behavior; skip it if seeing marine mammals in human care does not fit your values.

Admission is self-paced, and a hand stamp lets you leave and return the same day. Give yourself a few hours if you want to walk the grounds and catch several sessions. It is a compact attraction, and the quiet gaps between presentations can feel long if you expect nonstop activity. Session times vary, so check the day's lineup before making one presentation the whole reason for your stop. Dock and in-water encounters are separate experiences; book ahead and confirm the check-in time if one is your main reason for coming.

Jayne and Mandy Rodriguez founded the nonprofit center in 1984 around a promise of lifelong care for its dolphins. The current animal family includes dolphins and California sea lions, as well as harbor seals, parrots and tortoises. The center says more than half its animals were born there. Other residents came from different facilities, while rescued animals deemed unreleasable also have a home there.

Sessions can cover play, husbandry, medical training and research observations. The center describes its cognition work as mental stimulation for the animals and a way to learn how they think and communicate. Ask what a particular session is demonstrating; that context can make the animal-care work more interesting than watching from the path alone.

The garden grew from a 1999 program for four Vietnam veterans with PTSD. Co-founder Mandy Rodriguez, a Marine Corps veteran who had also experienced PTSD, took part in the first group. It adds a quieter, personal story to a visit otherwise shaped by the lagoons and animal sessions.

The lagoon paths give you a clear view of dolphins with the center's docks in the frame. Keep cameras off the floating docks during dock programs. For in-water encounters, only a waterproof camera that floats or is attached to you is allowed.
