USCGC Ingham is a 327-foot Coast Guard cutter moored in Truman Waterfront Park on Key West’s western edge, now a floating maritime museum. The museum centers on the cutter’s decks, restored crew spaces, and exhibits. If you like getting inside the details of a historic ship, this is a stronger stop than another harbor-side look from shore; it also gives you a view across the water.

Guided group visits take 45 to 60 minutes, and you can also explore at your own pace, so allow about an hour as a rough guide. The exact rooms open to individual visitors aren’t clearly laid out. Check the current tour setup if you have mobility needs or want to see a particular compartment. The park has a playground, slides, and a water feature nearby, which makes it easy to pair the museum with time outside. Regular food service and public restroom access aboard the ship weren’t confirmed, so plan meals elsewhere and check restroom arrangements if you need one.

Built for work at seaIngham is 327 feet long, with a beam just over 41 feet.

Ingham is 327 feet long, with a beam just over 41 feet. Her keel was laid at Philadelphia Navy Yard in 1935; she launched and entered service in 1936, then remained on Coast Guard duty until 1988. She was christened Samuel D. Ingham, the fourth cutter to carry that name, before it was shortened to Ingham in 1937. The seven Treasury-class cutters were named for U.S. Treasury secretaries.

The U-626 storyIn December 1942, Ingham attacked a sound contact with depth charges.

In December 1942, Ingham attacked a sound contact with depth charges. Postwar German records indicated that U-626 was lost in the area, and Ingham received credit for the sinking; U.S. Navy and British Admiralty accounts credited her with the December 15 attack. It’s a remarkable episode to keep in mind while walking a ship that was still on duty decades later.

A decorated Coast Guard careerIngham served from the years before World War II through the late 20th century.

Ingham served from the years before World War II through the late 20th century. At retirement, she was the Coast Guard’s most decorated vessel and the only cutter awarded two Presidential Unit Citations. The colorful service ribbons displayed on her superstructure give you a close-up reminder of that long career.

Give the harbor a look, tooThe ship’s deck has views over Key West Harbor, and sunset is a popular time to linger.

The ship’s deck has views over Key West Harbor, and sunset is a popular time to linger. For a whole-ship photo, step back onto the waterfront and take in the bow and long hull together; a tight crop makes it harder to read the cutter’s scale. The museum sits at the end of Southard Street in Truman Waterfront Park. The park is reachable by car, on foot, and by public transit. Treat the ship as a museum stop rather than a meal stop, and make dining plans around the wider Key West waterfront.
