Old Bahia Honda Bridge Trail

Overview

This is a quick, view-first walk on Bahia Honda Key that trades miles for history. At just 0.4 miles round-trip (out and back), the Old Bahia Honda Bridge Trail climbs a staircase to a fenced overlook on a remnant of the former US 1 bridge—built atop Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad. Expect big ocean-and-bay panoramas and a tight dose of Keys history rather than a traditional hike.

Trail Experience

Start at the interpretive signs, then ascend the staircase to the old highway deck. The path climbs gently to a safe, fenced endpoint where the bridge is closed further out; the barrier has been moved closer to shore in recent years. From the deck you can study the steel trusswork and imagine the original railroad tracks that once hung from the trusses beneath the highway surface. Views sweep over the Atlantic on one side and the bayside marina and shoreline on the other.

Conditions and Scenery

Shade is limited—Hurricane Irma stripped much of the former sea grape canopy—so it’s sunny and breezy up top. Keep an eye out for surviving sea grapes and railroad vine along the approach. This is an overlook, not a long trek; the payoff is the vantage point and the context you get from the signs and the structure itself.

History Snapshot

The railroad bridge opened in 1912, conquering the Keys’ deepest channel (about 35 feet). After the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane ended rail service, the span was converted for automobiles in 1938 by laying a highway deck atop the trusses. A modern bridge replaced it in 1972, and only a short section now remains open to walk as a scenic overlook.

Best Time to Hike

Go early or late for softer light and cooler temps—sunrise and sunset are especially photogenic from the deck. Midday can be harsh and hot due to the lack of shade, but the constant breeze helps.

Access and Logistics

Park in the main marina lot inside Bahia Honda State Park (36850 Overseas Highway); the trailhead and stairs are across from the marina, with restrooms by Calusa Beach. Bicycles are not permitted, and the required stairs make this route not wheelchair- or stroller-accessible. A park entrance fee is required (listed as $8 per vehicle plus a small county surtax; subject to change).
