Getting there

The land approach is Highway 4 and a forestry road to Secret Beach Marina, including a final 14.8 km of gravel. From there, the water taxi crossing to the lodge takes about 40 minutes; charter floatplanes can also land at its dock. Arrange your transfer and check the access details before setting out. On the islands, overnight camping is closed from October 1 through April 30; that seasonal restriction applies to the Broken Group, not automatically to the lodge.

Broken Islands Lodge is a remote, water-access lodge and kayak base at Sechart on Barkley Sound, on Vancouver Island’s west coast just north of the Broken Group Islands. It works as a gateway to the boat-only islands: the lodge rents kayaks and offers water transfers with boats into protected waters. It suits an overnight stay and day paddles, or a longer kayak trip with gear arranged here. This is a lodge and launch point, not a roadside stop or public visitor centre; arrange your visit with the operator.

Staying at the lodgeLodge stays include breakfast and dinner in the dining room, plus a packed lunch.

Lodge stays include breakfast and dinner in the dining room, plus a packed lunch. Three rooms have private bathrooms; other rooms use shared bathrooms down the hall. The operator also offers kayak and canoe rentals, a hot tub, Wi-Fi and forest trails. Access to meals, restrooms and other lodge facilities for non-guests isn’t clear, so don’t count on them as public drop-in amenities.

The lodge occupies the former Pacific Whaling Company station, which operated here from 1905 to 1917. The operator still calls the property Sechart Whaling Station. The research found no reliable detail on which, if any, station structures survive, so treat that as the site’s history rather than assuming the lodge buildings are preserved whaling buildings.
