Radar Hill

Overview

Radar Hill is the park’s easy win: a short, paved stroll to a breezy hilltop with broad views and a dose of military history. It sits between Tofino and Ucluelet and works perfectly as a quick stop when you’re cruising the Pacific Rim Highway.

What You’ll See

On clear days you’ll get 180-degree vistas—forest, ocean, islands, even Long Beach from one of the lookouts. Up top, the Kap’yong Memorial commemorates Canadian service in the Korean War, layered over the hill’s past life as a World War II radar station.

How Long & How Hard

Think minutes, not miles. The main path is short and gently graded, designed for an easy there-and-back to a couple of lookouts. If you want more, the nearby parking areas also serve as trailheads for longer outings (Radar Beach from the far upper lot; the Canso Bomber crash site from the lower lot).

Wildlife

This vantage point is good for scanning the sky—expect the odd eagle or other birds riding coastal winds. Quiet forest edges around the path can host small mammals, but this spot is more about the panorama than close-up wildlife encounters.

Practicalities

There’s a designated parking area and you’ll need a valid park pass to leave your vehicle. Dogs are permitted but must be leashed and under control at all times. It can be windy on the hilltop—bring a layer.

Best Time to Visit

• Clear weather is everything here; fog and rain can flatten the views.
• Sunrise and sunset give the most flattering light and fewer people.
• Weekday mornings are the quietest in peak season; off-season can feel wonderfully empty. In winter, the vehicle gate may occasionally be closed—walking up the road adds a short approach but keeps the experience peaceful.

Is It Worth It?

Yes—especially if you’re collecting great views without burning half a day. Treat it as a scenic pit stop or pair it with Radar Beach or the Canso Bomber trail to turn a quick lookout into a half-day circuit.

History Snapshot
