More about Owen Point Sea Caves

A West Coast Trail highlightOwen Point Sea Caves are rounded sandstone openings in a rocky point on the West Coast Trail,…

Owen Point Sea Caves are rounded sandstone openings in a rocky point on the West Coast Trail, at km 67. They are a memorable stop for hikers already making this demanding backcountry trek, not a standalone drive-up attraction. Reservations are required, and the usual overnight hiking season runs May 1 to October 7.

Get the tide rightFrom Beach Access at km 65, follow the sandstone shelf to the point.

From Beach Access at km 65, follow the sandstone shelf to the point. The shelf is passable only at low tide, and surge channels make careful tide-table planning essential. Past Owen Point, the beach route turns into slow, large boulders toward Thrasher Cove; the inland forest route is the alternative when tides are high or you want to avoid that section.

How the caves formedPacific surges have worn the sandstone into rounded chambers.

Pacific surges have worn the sandstone into rounded chambers. Mineral deposits in the rock and sea salt give the walls their vivid colour, which changes with the light. A narrow opening leads into a larger hollow that feels tucked inside the cliff.

Look out through the rockFrom inside, the broad opening frames the Pacific and Owen Island offshore.

From inside, the broad opening frames the Pacific and Owen Island offshore. For the classic view, photograph outward from the cave so the curved sandstone frames the water. Late-day sunshine can bring out green and yellow tones, though the colour depends on the light.

This is a backcountry route feature, so carry the food and water you need for your hike rather than expecting a service stop at the caves. Check current trail access and tide information before your trip. If the shelf is unsafe, take the inland forest route and skip the caves; it also bypasses the boulders beyond the point.
