Water, permits and facilities

Camping is permitted May 1 through September 30 and requires a Parks Canada backcountry camping permit; visitors 18 and older also need a park entry pass. Solar composting outhouses are provided at designated camping areas, though their exact position on Dodd is not mapped. There is no potable water: carry 4–6 litres per person per day and pack all garbage out. Dogs are not allowed in the Broken Group except service animals. July and August are busiest; May, June or September usually means fewer people sharing the camping areas.

Dodd Island is a designated backcountry camping area in the Broken Group Islands, a maze of forested islands, channels and beaches in Barkley Sound. It is reached by boat, not road, so this is a remote paddling trip rather than a drive-up campground. Stay within the designated camping area.

Come prepared to navigate with charts and judge tides and weather; conditions can change quickly, and some crossings take three or more hours. Strong winds can funnel through the channels, and small craft should avoid Loudon and Imperial Eagle Channels. Secret Beach is a road-access kayak launch, but licensed marine operators cannot drop visitors at designated camping islands, so plan how you will reach your landing before setting out.

Tseshaht Beachkeepers patrol during summer, maintain camping areas and share cultural interpretation. The Broken Group includes places of spiritual and cultural significance to Tseshaht, and campground restoration protects shell middens, roots and soil. No Dodd-specific midden location was established, so leave cultural and natural features undisturbed.
