Overview

About Heights of Abraham

Why stop

  • Cable-car flight over the Derwent Valley
  • Two guided caverns plus a full hilltop estate

Heads up

  • Steep paths and 175 cavern steps
  • Crowded on weekends and school holidays
This is a managed hilltop estate, not a roadside viewpoint, and the mix is unusual: you arrive by cable car over the Derwent Valley, go underground into two guided show caverns, then have a 60-acre wooded hilltop of paths, viewpoints and heritage buildings to wander. One ticket covers the cable car, cavern tours, exhibitions and facilities, and most visitors spend three to five hours here, so treat it as a half day rather than a quick photo stop.

Before you go

Best time to go

The site runs on a seasonal pattern, open daily from 20 March to 1 November, with mid-week closing around 16:00 and weekends and school holidays around 17:00. The closing time displayed on the day is the one that counts. Because a full visit runs several hours, aim to be on the first cable cars of the day rather than mid-afternoon, and expect the busiest conditions on weekends and school holidays.

Arrival and parking

There is no car park at the attraction. Official guidance sends you to the council pay-and-display car parks in Matlock Bath, and the railway station car park is closest, about a 400 m riverside walk to the cable-car base station. Parking fills quickly at peak periods, so arriving early matters more here than at most Peak District stops.

“Tufa Cottage in the Via Gellia valley is made from stone deposited by nearby springs. When mineral-rich spring water reaches the air, it releases carbon dioxide and leaves behind a new layer of limestone.”

What you actually doRide the cable car from the base station in Matlock Bath to the summit of Masson Hill.
  • Ride the cable car from the base station in Matlock Bath to the summit of Masson Hill. The flight above the valley is the defining part of the visit.
  • Take both cavern tours with a guide: Great Masson Cavern, which covers the geology and mining story with a sound-and-light presentation, and Great Rutland Cavern, told through its Victorian mining and showman history.
  • Climb Victoria Prospect Tower, built in 1844, for a 360-degree view.
  • Walk the estate: original serpentine paths laid out for Georgian visitors, ancient woodland, heritage gardens, historic buildings and several viewpoints, plus a self-guided estate walk, the Willow Sculpture Trail and a Heritage Audio Tour.
  • Indoor and family bits: The Long View exhibition on the site's roughly 240-year story, a Wombles exhibition, High Falls Film Theatre, Woodland Corner, adventure playgrounds and a rock and crystal gift shop.
  • Eat or picnic: Vista Restaurant and Bar, Terrace Cafe, the Tavern, and picnic spots around the grounds if you would rather bring your own.

This is a steep natural hillside and that shapes everything. The buildings are accessible, and the cable cars run on a continuous loop that can take most wheelchairs and pushchairs within the stated size limits, but some paths, Victoria Prospect Tower and the natural caverns are not suitable for wheelchair users or anyone with walking difficulties. The cavern tours involve uneven ground and 175 steps. If mobility is a factor, check the site's accessibility map and cavern details before booking a visit around them.

  • The paths are steep and the hilltop needs real walking, even after the cable car does the climbing.
  • Parking is off-site, paid and competitive, which adds time at both ends of the visit.
  • The caverns are cold underground, so bring an extra layer even on a warm day.
  • Dogs are welcome on the cable cars and around the estate on leads, with water bowls, but not in the caverns or the restaurant, so plan who waits outside.
  • Rushing this place does not work. If you only have an hour, you will pay for the whole estate and see a fraction of it.
