Overview

About Dovedale Stepping Stones

Why stop

  • Distinctive limestone crossing beneath Thorpe Cloud
  • Short riverside approach into the wider Dovedale scenery

Heads up

  • Crowded on weekends and school holidays
  • Uneven crossing can be slippery or difficult when the river is high
A line of limestone blocks set into the River Dove turns a riverside stroll into a proper little adventure. The stones sit at the foot of Thorpe Cloud, the isolated flat-topped limestone hill that guards the mouth of the valley, and crossing them puts you on the Derbyshire/Staffordshire boundary, since the river marks the county line right here.

Before you go

Best time to go

This is a heavily visited spot in the national park, and honestly it can feel busy. Weekends, bank holidays and school holidays are the crunch, with the nearby car park often full by around 9am. Go early on a weekday for softer light along the river and a chance of the stones to yourself. Late afternoon works too once day trippers thin out.

Getting there and footwear

From Dovedale Car Park it is about 640 m to the stones, following the river from the car park entrance. That approach is graded as an access-for-all route, but the stones themselves stand in the river and need balance, a free hand and sensible footwear. Surfaces on the wider walk can be uneven, sloping, muddy or slippery after rain, and the river level rises after wet weather, so the tops of the blocks can be wet or partly submerged.

The setting is a limestone gorge: clear shallow water, wooded slopes, and pale rock outcrops rising on both sides. Most people cross, turn round, cross back, and take photos from the shingle. From the stones you can carry on upstream into the valley, or take the steep pull up Thorpe Cloud for a wide view down over the crossing.

The stones are a long-standing visitor magnet, placed in the middle of the 19th century, and they have been drawing walkers here ever since. They are worn, uneven and thoroughly used, which is part of the appeal.

Wildlife and the reserveThe valley is part of a National Nature Reserve, designated in 2006.

The valley is part of a National Nature Reserve, designated in 2006. The river supports fish, invertebrates and birds, and with luck you may spot dipper, heron or ducks; the slopes carry woodland, grassland meadow, wildflowers, ferns and fungi. Nothing is guaranteed, so treat sightings as a bonus.

  • Dogs must be kept on leads throughout the nature reserve, to protect wildlife and other visitors.
  • Parking, public toilets and light refreshments are available nearby at Dovedale, with the Izaak Walton Hotel also close by. Use designated parking rather than verges.
  • Honest drawbacks: limited quiet time at peak periods, a crowded feel around the crossing area, and no dry-shod guarantee if the Dove is running high.
