Heads up

  • Small interior with stairs and uneven surfaces
This small brick market house on Main Street was the first property acquired by the National Trust in the Peak District, acquired in 1906 for £50. The building is listed and dates from the 16th or 17th century, and its lower arched part dates from the early 1700s, when Winster gained the right to hold a Saturday market. Butter, cheese and other local produce were once sold under those arches.

What you see and doAdmission is free, and the building is usually open during daylight hours.
  • Admission is free, and the building is usually open during daylight hours.
  • The first floor is an information room with interpretation panels about Winster and its history.
  • A scale model of the village helps you place the lanes, houses and old market routes before you walk them.
  • From the street, the arcaded ground floor and the brickwork repay a slow look.
How it fits a village visitTreat it as the orientation point for Winster rather than a destination in itself.

Treat it as the orientation point for Winster rather than a destination in itself. Read the panels and study the model, then use what you have learned to explore the village's narrow streets and old cottages on foot. Combined with a walk around Winster and other nearby village heritage, the stop earns its place in a day out.

Access and practicalitiesThere are steps and uneven surfaces, and wheelchair access is not available.
  • There are steps and uneven surfaces, and wheelchair access is not available.
  • There is no National Trust car park, and village parking is very limited, so be ready to walk in, park considerately in designated spaces, and respect residents.
  • There are no toilet facilities onsite.
Honest drawbacksThe interior is genuinely small, and visitors expecting a full museum often find the inside…

The interior is genuinely small, and visitors expecting a full museum often find the inside brief. The appeal lies in the age of the building, its place in National Trust history, and the local detail it gives you before a village stroll. If you need step-free access or easy parking, plan carefully or enjoy the building from the outside.
