Pocaterra Tarn

Overview

Pocaterra Tarn is a small alpine pond tucked along the popular Pocaterra Cirque/Pocaterra Ridge outing. It’s scenic, simple, and completely undeveloped—more a pretty stop than a destination with facilities. Because the route to it is undesignated, you won’t find it on the official trail reports, and you shouldn’t expect markers or maintenance.

Route & Access

Most visitors reach the tarn from Highwood Meadows Day Use at Highwood Pass. The lot is small (about 40 stalls) and fills early during fall larch season. There are no on‑trail amenities at the tarn itself—no toilets, tables, or potable water—so plan accordingly.

Season & Conditions

This is best as a snow‑free objective. In winter the route is typically buried, navigation becomes non‑trivial, and it’s not maintained. If you’re here in winter, stick to the park’s signed snowshoe routes or the managed cross‑country ski network instead of trying to “hike” to the tarn. Note that vehicle access to Highwood Meadows is closed annually from December 1 to June 14.

Why It’s Worth Your Time

When conditions are dry, the tarn is a lovely pause on a bigger day—especially during larch season when nearby hillsides turn gold. It’s not a long linger spot; think quick photos and a snack before continuing the cirque or ridge.

What To Know

• It’s an unofficial route: expect uneven terrain and occasional steep sections if you continue toward the ridge.
• You won’t see it in Alberta Parks’ official trail updates; use those reports for overall area conditions and seasonal closures, but don’t expect specifics for the tarn.
• Bear awareness is a must across the park.

Best Time to Visit

Late summer into fall is the sweet spot, with peak draw during larch season. During that window, plan an early start (before 8 am) to beat the parking crunch at Highwood Meadows. In winter, choose the signed snowshoe trails instead—this isn’t a good cold‑season target.
