Highwood Meadows Interpretive Trail

Overview

A quick, scenic pause at Highwood Pass, this barrier‑free, boardwalk interpretive trail wanders through fragile alpine meadows with big mountain views. It’s designed for learning (lots of signage) and easy access, not for racking up miles.

Distance and pace

It’s 0.6 km one way (about 1.2 km/0.75 mi total out‑and‑back). Most people take 20–40 minutes, longer if you linger at the viewpoints and signs.

What you’ll see

Open alpine meadows and surrounding peaks right at the crest of the pass. In the short growing season, wildflowers pop soon after snowmelt. Stay on the boardwalk—this ecosystem is delicate and shows wear quickly.

Accessibility and surfaces

The route is mostly level boardwalk and intended to be barrier‑free. Note there has been a small step up onto the boardwalk reported in the past, which could be a hiccup for some wheelchairs and strollers.

Season and access

There is no vehicle access to the trailhead from December 1 through June 14 each year due to the Highwood Pass road closure. Plan this for the snow‑free season after the gate opens.

Permits, groups, and nearby add‑on

A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is required to park. Group size is capped at 35. If you want more of a hike after this sampler, Ptarmigan Cirque starts across the highway and offers a moderate alpine loop when the road is open.

Best time to go

Mid‑summer is prime—typically early to mid‑July for wildflowers once the snow finally clears. Go early or late in the day for softer light and fewer people.

Safety notes

This is active bear country. Travel in groups, make noise, keep pets leashed, and carry bear spray—and know how to use it.
