Giant Logs

Giant Logs is a short interpretive loop behind Rainbow Forest Museum, with one of the park’s most concentrated displays of large, colorful petrified wood. If you want to see the logs up close without taking on a longer hike, it’s a strong stop. The loop is 0.4 mile and paved, but several sets of stairs make the distance a misleading guide to accessibility.

A numbered trail guide is available inside the museum; pick it up before you start. The loop circles through the log field and reaches Old Faithful near the top. It’s a short walk rather than a strenuous hike, but strollers and some mobility aids may not work on the stair sections. Leashed dogs are allowed on developed trails; bikes aren’t allowed on this loop.

At nearly 10 feet across at the base, Old Faithful is the headline log. Its trunk runs in long, blocky sections; other logs show the red, gold, and purple mineral colors that make this stop memorable. For a photo, include the full length of a long trunk with some of the path in frame. A close-up brings out the pattern, but the wider view gives the log its scale.

At stop 5, look north to the striped mesa. Its bands record old river and floodplain surfaces: the sandstone below marks a riverbed about 216 million years ago, while bluish-purple layers represent muddy floodplains. Giant Logs sits in the Sonsela Member, deposited roughly 219 to 213 million years ago.

These logs were once an ancient jam in a Late Triassic river, and Giant Logs was the heart of the national monument when it was set aside in 1906. The Mather Plaque on the loop honors Stephen T. Mather, the National Park Service’s first director. It connects the park’s geology with its preservation history, so give the small marker a look instead of heading straight to Old Faithful.

The trailhead is right behind Rainbow Forest Museum and Visitor Center. Pick up the trail guide, use the nearby restrooms, and refill your water bottle before starting. Parking and picnic facilities serve the area, and a short stop here pairs naturally with the museum.
