Parking

Use the Rainbow Forest Museum and Visitor Center parking area; Giant Logs starts behind the museum. Parking for autos and buses/RVs, restrooms, potable water and a bottle-filling station are listed at the trail area. Normal park admission and operating hours apply.

Safety

Several stair sets and a 19.1% maximum grade may make this unsuitable for strollers or mobility equipment. Dogs must stay on a leash six feet or shorter on the paved loop; pet access on the unpaved west spur is not established by the park's paved-trail rule.

Hiking Giant Logs Trail

The loopGiant Logs Trail is a 0.

Giant Logs Trail is a 0.4-mile paved loop behind Rainbow Forest Museum, winding among some of Petrified Forest's largest, most colorful logs. Near the top is Old Faithful, almost ten feet wide at its base. Allow about 15 minutes for the loop itself; give it longer if you borrow the museum's trail guide and stop to look closely.

Steps and viewsThe path rises and falls through several sets of stairs. The listed average grade is 4.

The path rises and falls through several sets of stairs. The listed average grade is 4.8%, with a maximum of 19.1%, so pavement does not make this a stroller-friendly or easy mobility-device route. Visitors also point out open views from the overlooks. An unpaved spur leaves the back side of the trail toward a western overlook; it is open to foot traffic but is separate from the 0.4-mile loop measurement. Stay on the established tread in this resource-sensitive area.

Park at Rainbow Forest Museum and Visitor Center and head behind the building. The trail area has restrooms, drinking water and a bottle-filling station, benches, picnic tables and interpretive information; the museum has a trail guide. Dogs may use the paved loop on a leash no longer than six feet. The park's pet rule is specific to paved trails, so check with staff before taking a dog onto the unpaved spur.
