Crystal Forest

Crystal Forest is a short loop through pale badlands in the southern part of Petrified Forest National Park, with petrified logs scattered right beside the path. It is one of the park's best places to see the fossil wood up close, and many logs glimmer with quartz crystals. Keep it on your list if you want to walk among the wood, not just view the landscape from an overlook. The paved loop starts at its own parking area, about 8 miles from the south entrance. It is 0.75 mile; allow about half an hour if you want to stop and look closely.

The trail crosses open badlands, where shade is limited. Its paved surface makes the route clear, but the grade varies sharply, with some sections steep enough to make the full loop a poor fit for some mobility-device users. Parts are usable by mobility devices; don't assume the entire loop will feel easy.

The crystals that give Crystal Forest its name show inside some of the broken logs. Look for the quartz and the different mineral colors in the exposed ends; interpretive signs along the loop add context. This is a photo stop as much as a walk: frame a crystal-bearing end against the pale hills to show both the detail and the place it came from.

The petrified wood belongs to the Chinle Formation, laid down more than 200 million years ago during the Late Triassic. Much of the Chinle is river-related sediment, placing the fossil wood in a landscape shaped by ancient waterways.

Across the park, red, green and blue Chinle layers reflect ancient groundwater conditions. Iron oxidized to rusty red where oxygen was available; oxygen-poor conditions left green or blue hues. The pale slopes around Crystal Forest make a useful backdrop for those stronger bands of color.

Petrified wood is protected in the park. Leave every piece where it is; removing petrified wood from the park is against the rules.
