Puerco Pueblo

Puerco Pueblo is the low sandstone masonry remains of an ancestral Puebloan village near the Puerco River. More than 100 rooms once stood around a central plaza; what you see now is only part of a much larger archaeological site. Take the mostly paved 0.3-mile loop for the room foundations, petroglyphs and interpretive panels. It is a compact stop, but the rock art and the story behind the settlement give it more to look for than the low walls suggest at first glance.

The path starts at the south end of the parking lot and circles through the pueblo to petroglyph viewing points. The panels help make sense of the stabilized masonry, and the walk is where the most distinctive rock art comes into view; there is little to see from the lot alone. Parking and a vault/composting restroom serve the stop. The park lists the site as wheelchair accessible, though detailed grades and surface specifications are not available.

The one-story rooms were built from hand-shaped sandstone around a rectangular plaza. Rooms served as living and storage space, while cooking and crafts were centered in the plaza; several underground kivas were used for ceremonies. Much of the settlement remains buried, so the surviving walls are low and take some imagination. This is a place where the layout and the interpretive panels matter as much as the masonry itself.

After droughts in the 1200s encouraged people to gather in larger communities, Puerco Pueblo grew to perhaps 200 residents around 1300. Residents farmed corn, beans and squash on the river floodplain and terraces, and the Puerco River was also a route for travel and trade. By about 1380 the settlement was nearly empty as people moved to a more suitable area. The site remains culturally significant to Hopi and Zuni people.

Look among the boulders for a small spiral petroglyph. Around the summer solstice, sunrise light and shadow can move across its rings for roughly two weeks around June 21; the effect depends on the moment, so it is not guaranteed. If that is your reason for stopping, plan for an early visit near the solstice. Include some of the surrounding boulder in a photo so the small spiral has a sense of place.
