Why stop here

If you see one overlook on the Blue Mesa Scenic Road, make it this one. From the rim you get sweeping views of banded badlands in blues, purples, grays, and peaches—an otherworldly scene that many travelers call their favorite stop in the park. It also doubles as the start of the Blue Mesa Trail, so you can pair a quick viewpoint stop with a short wander among the formations.

What you'll see

• Panoramic, color‑striped hills and hoodoos shaped by millions of years of sedimentation and erosion.
• Scattered pieces of petrified wood in the landscape (far more once you drop onto the loop below).
• Clear interpretive panels that unpack the geology, including the bentonite clays that give the area its blue‑purple hues.

The short hike below the rim

From the overlook, the paved Blue Mesa Loop drops about 100 feet into the badlands and makes a roughly 1‑mile circuit before climbing back to the rim. It’s steep in a few spots but straightforward. Pro tip from frequent visitors: the east side of the loop is especially striking—walk counterclockwise if you want to lead with the best views.

Amenities and logistics

You’ll find auto parking, benches, a shade shelter, picnic tables, a bike rack, and interpretive exhibits at the overlook. On‑site restrooms are not listed here; plan ahead and use facilities elsewhere in the park. There are no food, water fill, or retail services at this stop.

Wildlife

This area is about the rocks and views, not wildlife. That said, you might spot lizards, birds, or small mammals typical of the high desert while you’re on the loop.

Best time to visit

Aim for early morning or late afternoon for softer light, cooler temps, and fewer people. Midday sees the heaviest traffic (and harshest light). Weekdays are generally calmer than weekends. Check park hours—gates close at posted times.

Is it worth it?

Absolutely. It’s one of the park’s most memorable views and a quick way to experience the surreal terrain up close. If your main goal is seeing the largest fields of petrified wood, pair this stop with areas farther south, but don’t skip Blue Mesa’s rim-and-loop combo.
