Overview

Kachina Point is the park’s showstopper overlook for the Painted Desert—sweeping red, coral, and pink badlands layered to the horizon. It sits right by the historic Painted Desert Inn, so you get knockout views and a dose of Route 66-era history in one stop.

Why it’s special

If you only pick one viewpoint for the Painted Desert, make it this one. The light plays across the banded hills all day, and the vantage is wide, uninterrupted, and camera-friendly. With the inn steps away, you can duck inside for interpretive exhibits before or after soaking up the panorama.

Trails and options

From the overlook, you can stroll a little and be done, or use it as a launching point. The Painted Desert Rim Trail begins here for a mellow scenic walk along the edge. There’s also a wilderness access route starting at Kachina Point; note this is not one of the developed trails and includes some switchbacks, so read the signage and be prepared before committing.

Amenities

This area is well set up for a quick stop or an unhurried break: parking for cars and RVs, flush restrooms, potable water and a bottle-filling station, picnic tables, benches, and interpretive exhibits at the Painted Desert Inn next door.

Practical notes

Outside of the inn’s shade, you’re exposed—bring sun protection and water even if you’re just lingering at the rail. Expect more people here than at smaller pullouts because it’s such a marquee view.

Best time to visit

Aim for early morning or late afternoon for softer light and richer colors. Weekdays are typically calmer; Saturdays see the heaviest midday crowds. It’s open during regular park hours (listed as roughly 7 AM–7:30 PM), but the light—and your photos—are far better at the edges of the day.
