Mount Manuel Trail

The trail starts at the Mount Manuel and Oak Grove junction inside the state park, then enters U.S. Forest Service land after about a mile. Much of the climb is sunny and exposed. The folds of the mountain block the ocean breeze, so it can feel hot even when the forecast sounds mild. Start early and carry all the water you’ll need; no dependable water source is identified along the route. Long pants help with scratchy brush, ticks and poison oak. Dogs aren’t allowed on this trail. The trailhead is reached from the park’s trail network; no separate parking lot at the junction was identified.

The first two miles follow narrow dirt tread up a steep hillside, with several switchbacks. Around a corner, the Big Sur River gorge opens below, and you can see a long section of trail climbing across the slope. That view gives you a good sense of how much uphill is still ahead. The path was described as a foot-wide strip of dirt on this lower stretch, so there’s little room to walk side by side.

Farther up, the trail gets rougher, with uneven rocky footing and brush that can lean across the tread, including poison oak. It passes through three small wooded patches that give brief shade. The first includes a few redwoods; the last is an open oak grove just before the ridge. Those pockets feel welcome, but most of the hike remains exposed. The repeated switchbacks and rougher upper tread are what make this a hard day, even before you reach the summit ridge.

After the oak grove, the route reaches the ridge, where the Pacific first comes into view. A short ridge walk and several switchbacks lead to a spur capped with rocks. The false summit and the outcrop just below it are the best viewpoints on the hike. Look west and south across the Santa Lucia ridges and the Big Sur and Little Sur valleys; on a clear day, the ocean appears beyond them. For a photo, keep a strip of the near ridge in the foreground so the folds of the valley have some scale.

This route ends at the false summit, which is the usual turnaround for the park-side hike. The true Manuel Peak summit is about half a mile farther along the ridge, and the named trail continues north toward Post Summit. Those extra miles belong to a different, longer outing. They aren’t needed to reach the false-summit viewpoint that makes this hike worthwhile.
