River Path and Warden's Path

River Path and Warden's Path is a 0.6-mile loop along the Big Sur River, through redwoods and picnic areas near Redwood Deck. It links the north-bank River Path to south-bank Warden's Path with footbridges at both ends. The paths sit back from the water, so expect a shady woodland walk with the river nearby rather than an open stroll at the water's edge. Give it about 20 minutes, or longer if you stop at the deck or picnic areas.

Take River Path to the western footbridge, cross the river, and return on Warden's Path. A second bridge near the Redwood Grove connection closes the loop. The route is short and easy; it works well when you want a pleasant break without taking on a climb. The adjacent Nature Trail and the longer Nature Trail–River Path combinations are separate itineraries and are not part of this 0.6-mile loop.

Near the Redwood Grove junction, look for the Proboscis, a redwood with a nose-like projection from its trunk. It is estimated to be 500–800 years old and is among the park's largest trees. The Ewoldsen Nature Center, with exhibits about local plants and wildlife, sits along Warden's Path as a separate seasonal stop.

Several picnic areas are on the route. Big Sur Lodge's café and grocery are nearby but separate from the trail, so this is an easy walk to pair with a meal or a picnic rather than a destination for food by itself.

This loop is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible. Day Use Lots 1 and 2 have accessible parking and restrooms; follow the signed paths to River Path Trailhead, and allow extra time for the walk from your car. Dogs are allowed on River Path and Warden's Path, but not on the adjacent Nature Trail or other park trails, so stay on the paired paths with a dog.
