Guide
Big Sur Station is a multi-agency visitor center on Highway 1, about half a mile south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park's entrance. Come here to get your bearings on the coast: staff answer questions about trails, beaches and campgrounds and help with trip planning.
The nature store carries wilderness maps, guidebooks, books, gifts and last-minute camping supplies. If you're choosing a hike, ask about trail conditions and routes before you set out; visitors regularly value the practical maps and staff advice here.
The cooperative facility was created in 1989 as both an information center and an emergency coordination location for the Big Sur community and its visitors. The Los Padres Forest Association operates the visitor center in partnership with the Forest Service, and the shop carries local products and outdoor essentials.
Visitors repeatedly report clean public restrooms. The center is near the Pine Ridge Trailhead, a separate access point for hikers. This is a planning stop rather than a sightseeing attraction; its value is the local knowledge, maps and supplies.
