Big Sur Lodge

Big Sur Lodge is a cottage-style lodging campus inside Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, set among redwoods near the Big Sur River. Choose it for an overnight base close to the park’s trails and wooded river valley. Room upkeep can feel dated, and in-room Wi-Fi can be patchy, so I’d book for the setting and location rather than hotel polish.

The single, double and family rooms are cottage-style, with fireplaces and kitchenettes. They don’t have air conditioning. If a cool room or reliable Wi-Fi matters to you, check the exact room details before you reserve.

The Homestead Restaurant & Bar has indoor dining among the redwoods and an outdoor patio overlooking the Big Sur River. For something quicker, the coffee bar serves espresso drinks, grab-and-go fruit and baked goods, deli sandwiches, salads, milkshakes and hand-dipped ice cream. There’s also a gift shop and general store, which makes the campus useful when you’d rather stay close to your room or a trail.

John and Florence Pfeiffer lived in a cabin on the north bank of the Big Sur River beginning in 1884. John studied local plants, coastal weather, birds and animals, and kept bees; the family history says their apiary once produced sixteen tons of honey in a year. Their life here was a working homestead, with farming, ranching and logging alongside the hospitality that later grew into a resort.

The operator dates the Pfeiffer Ranch Resort to 1908. In the family’s telling, Florence began charging a visitor for horses, beds and meals after he mistreated one of their mules. It’s a very Big Sur origin story: this was a family ranch before it became a place travelers could stay.

John Pfeiffer turned down a 1930 offer from a developer who wanted to subdivide the land. In 1933 he sold 700 acres to California for a state park named for him and Florence. That fall the Civilian Conservation Corps established Camp Big Sur in the park; crews built visitor facilities including a dance floor, pool and outdoor theater, which later floods destroyed.
