Getting There & The Road Reality

Access is via the Coronet Peak turnoff and then Skippers Road. The surface is unsealed, mostly one lane, and cut into friable rock—with sheer drop‑offs, dust when dry, and slick “greasy” clay when wet. Many rental car policies exclude this road; if you’re not comfortable with exposure and tight edges, consider a guided 4WD tour instead. Use passing bays, pull well off the carriageway at signed stops, and never pause on blind corners.

Skippers Canyon was booming by late 1862 after major gold finds, with nearby settlements swelling (Charlestown reportedly peaked around a thousand people before fading). To service the goldfield, Skippers Road was blasted and benched between 1883 and 1890. Downstream, the high Skippers suspension bridge (completed 1898–1901) became the area’s emblem. The canyon also hosted early hydroelectric generation in 1886 to power mining machinery.
