This is the 172.5 m compound Pratt truss you see in so many Queenstown Trail photos. Opened on April 14, 1915, it replaced an earlier 1871 bridge lost to floods. The tall concrete piers and airy steelwork frame classic vistas—The Remarkables to the south, Coronet Peak to the north—so even a quick stop pays off.

Getting There & On‑the‑Ground Details

Access is via Spence Road; the bridge sits upstream of the modern highway crossing, about 11 km from town. It’s open 24 hours, and you’ll share the deck with bikes—step aside when you stop for photos. There’s a basic public toilet at one end of the bridge and an information board on site.

Designed in 1909 by James Edward Fulton, the project hit delays (legal wrangles and a pier collapse) before the Public Works Department finished it in 1915. After a new road bridge took over in 1975, this one languished—then got a second life in 2004–2005 when the Rotary Shotover Bridge Restoration Trust rebuilt the deck and handrails, raising around NZ$700k and earning an international Rotary award. Today it’s pedestrian/cycle‑only and a proud feature of the Queenstown Trail.
