Overview

Wilcox Green is Arrowtown’s little riverside commons: a simple, grassy reserve beside the Arrow River that locals use for laid‑back picnics, throwing a ball, and short wanders. The open space frames a cracking view of Arrowtown Hill, which turns a blaze of color in autumn.

Why It’s Called “Wilcox Green”

The reserve sits on what used to be Arrowtown’s skating rink on Nairn Street and was named to honor Jim (Jimmy) Wilcox (1929–1994). He was one of those do‑everything locals: long‑serving borough councillor (including Deputy Mayor), Fire Brigade stalwart, Civil Defence Controller, and a past president of the Lakes District Museum—he even escorted the Queen Mother during her 1965 visit.

How to Use It

Think of this as a low‑key base for an easy river walk and a picnic on the lawn. If you’re bringing dogs, keep an eye out for cyclists—this corridor is popular with riders.
