Challenging

A locals’ favorite with a backcountry feel, the Big Hill Track climbs from Arrowtown’s Bush Creek to the Big Hill Saddle on an old gold‑era bridle route. Expect roughly 15 km/9.3 miles total (out-and-back) with about 800 m/2,600 ft of gain in 5–6 hours. It’s a moderate to advanced undertaking: part formed track, part marked route, with steep, rough sections and the chance of mud or slippery patches after rain.
This one’s about history and big Otago views. You’ll thread beech forest and dry tussock slopes, cross old water‑race benches, then pop onto open country. From Eichardt’s Flat, look for sweeping views over the Arrow Basin and Lake Hayes. From the Big Hill Saddle, the skyline opens toward Macetown with Advance Peak standing behind it.
Start in Arrowtown at Bush Creek near the Chinese Settlement and climb to Eichardt’s Flat. The track continues through tussock and a patch of mountain beech forest before the final pull to Big Hill Saddle. Most people return the way they came. Strong parties sometimes link variants: descend to Eight Mile/Coronet Creek (a poled route) toward the Macetown side, or build a bigger day returning via Arrow Gorge Road; some runners work in a Sawpit Gully/Bush Creek loop. If you do push toward Macetown, be ready for short 4WD sections and a possible river ford depending on conditions.
Although signed in places, this is more “route” than manicured trail. Fitness matters, and so does judgment. Bring sturdy footwear (poles help), warm layers and a shell, sun protection, and enough water—sources can be scarce on the tops. Carry a topo/GPX and be comfortable following poles or indistinct tread where markings thin out.
It’s hikeable year‑round for prepared trampers, but the track is most enjoyable in settled weather when the tops are dry and views are clear. Avoid or take extra care after heavy rain (mud, slippery slopes, and fords if extending toward Macetown). In colder spells, expect snow or ice on the saddle.
Park in Arrowtown near Ramshaw Lane by the Chinese Miners Camp (Bush Creek). The Arrowtown–Macetown road beyond is 4WD‑only; plan pickups accordingly if you’re doing a through‑route.
The track crosses private land—stay on the formed route and respect property. No dogs or trail bikes. Pack out all rubbish and leave gates as you find them.
Choose this if you want a quieter, historic climb with wide‑open Otago views and don’t mind some rough, steep travel. Want a shorter crowd‑pleaser with views? Consider Queenstown Hill as an easier alternative.

Partly a route rather than a formed track; steep, rough, and can be muddy or slippery after rain. Weather changes quickly on the tops. If extending toward Macetown, expect a poled route and possible river ford. Crosses private land; no dogs or trail bikes.
