Overview

Gray Fox Overlook is a signed viewpoint on a low ridge with big‑sky views over the Oak Creek corridor and classic Sedona red‑rock backdrops, including Cathedral Rock on clear days. It’s a simple stop: come for the vista and the sense of space — not for facilities.

Getting There

Start at the park entrance/Visitor Center and grab the free brochure map. Follow the signed trails to the overlook; many visitors reach it via the Javelina Trail loop (about 1.8 miles, easy, ~144 ft gain). Trails are maintained and clearly signed, but ask rangers at the desk if you want the most direct route.

What You’ll See

Expect a sweeping perch above riparian Oak Creek with red buttes and cliffs all around. On a clear day, Cathedral Rock lines the horizon. Bring a camera; this is a straightforward, high‑reward stop.

Wildlife & Nature Notes

Dawn and dusk are your best bets for spotting lizards, raptors, and other crepuscular wildlife. Binoculars make this viewpoint twice as fun. The red scenery comes from Permian‑age sandstones that weather into those vivid "Sedona red" forms you’ll be staring at.

Rules and Practicalities

There are no amenities at the overlook itself. Use restrooms at the Miller Visitor Center. Twin Cypress Picnic Area’s restroom is closed on Friday, September 19, 2025. Park hours are 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. (last entry 4:30 p.m.). The entire park will be closed October 21–22, 2025 for staff training. Stay on designated trails; no swimming or wading in the creek; only ADA service animals are permitted.

Best Time to Visit

Aim for early morning or late afternoon for softer light and more wildlife activity, keeping park hours in mind. Clear days give you the best shot at seeing Cathedral Rock on the skyline.
