Yavapai Ridge is a brief, scenic loop tucked inside Red Rock State Park near Sedona. Reached from the Kisva Trail along Oak Creek, it’s easy‑to‑moderate walking with a short, mellow climb to low‑ridge views of the red‑rock escarpments. Trails here are well marked and family‑friendly, and most are hikers‑only. Pets are not allowed on this or any park trail.
The Yavapai Ridge Trail itself is about 0.36 miles (1,919 feet) and can be hiked in either direction. Elevation gain is minimal: roughly 19 feet up and 25 feet down, with a high point near 3,933 feet. It’s part of the park’s roughly 5‑mile web of loops that also includes Eagle’s Nest, Apache Fire, Coyote Ridge, Kisva, and Javelina.
From the Visitor Center, follow the Kisva Trail through the riparian corridor along Oak Creek. Watch for the signed spur/loop to Yavapai Ridge, complete the short ridge circuit for the best viewpoints, then return the way you came on Kisva. Want more? Linkups are straightforward: Coyote Ridge and Eagle’s Nest make a longer outing; bridges also connect toward Apache Fire.
Expect a quick payoff: low‑ridge panoramas and, down along Kisva, a ribbon of green cottonwoods shading Oak Creek. The ridge exposes red sandstones of the Schnebly Hill Formation—ancient wind‑blown dunes—punctuated by thin gray limestone layers from a brief marine incursion. Birding and general wildlife watching are best near the creek; give animals space and follow posted rules.
Go early or late for cooler temps and flattering light on the red rock. The ridge is sun‑exposed; the riparian approach offers shade. Pick up a paper map at the Visitor Center for easy loop linking and to check current advisories.
Kisva crosses Oak Creek and conditions can vary with season and flow—check at the Visitor Center before you commit to a direction of travel. Most trails here are closed to bikes and equestrian use is limited to designated routes. Recent visitor impressions note easy navigation, less crowding than many Sedona spots, and an entry fee to access the park.
Park at the Red Rock State Park Visitor Center lot; start on the Kisva Trail to reach the Yavapai Ridge loop.
