Overview

This is the quick-hit viewpoint walk in Red Rock State Park: a compact loop to the photogenic House of Apache Fire with wide-open red rock vistas. Expect about 0.8 miles total for the loop, or roughly 1.0 mile if you do it as an out-and-back, with a gradual ~137 feet of elevation gain. It’s easy to moderate, family-friendly, and delivers a lot of scenery fast.

What You’ll See

You’ll wind through classic Sedona sandstone and pinyon–juniper before popping onto a knoll where the 1940s House of Apache Fire sits. Built by Jack and Helen Frye and named for the campfire smoke of Yavapai Apache workers who helped construct it, the house is closed to entry—plan on admiring it from outside. Down near Oak Creek, the riparian corridor greens up the landscape and draws wildlife; birding can be excellent and river otters are occasionally spotted.

Route Tips

From the visitor center, follow signed paths toward Kingfisher Bridge to cross Oak Creek, then climb to the house and loop back via a connector for that ~0.8-mile circuit. Prefer simple? Go out-and-back to the house for about 1.0 mile total. The trail surface is mostly smooth with a few short, rocky stretches and clear signage. If you want more mileage, stitch on Coyote Ridge or Eagle’s Nest for a longer outing.

Best Times to Hike

Shade is limited, so start early—especially in warmer months. The trail sees the most use from October through June, with spring busiest. Early morning offers cooler temps and quieter paths.

Logistics and Need-to-Know

Park at the visitor center; restrooms and maps are available there. This is a day-use park with an entry fee ($10 per person). No dogs are allowed on park trails. Cell reception is spotty to none, so download a map or grab the paper one at the visitor center. Nature-guided walks are sometimes offered—nice if you want more context on the local flora and fauna.

Should You Do It?

Yes—if you want a short, scenic payoff without committing half a day. It’s not the park’s grandest hike, but it’s a satisfying sampler with history, views, and easy add-on options.
