Apache Fire Loop

Apache Fire Loop is a roughly one-mile circuit in the southern part of Red Rock State Park. It follows the winding Apache Fire hillside corridor, then closes on Kisva Trail between the same two junctions. You get a marked viewpoint and a look toward the historic House of Apache Fires without committing to a long park hike. The complete circuit maps to about 0.99 miles; the 0.8-mile figure is the Apache Fire leg one way, not the full loop. Allow 30 to 45 minutes, with a little extra time for the view.

Start at the Apache Fire–Kisva junction and take the winding Apache Fire path toward the House of Apache Fires. At the far junction, turn onto Kisva for the short return to your starting point. The tread is natural and unpaved, with modest rises and dips; the elevation profile varies by about 95 feet from low to high, which is not the same as total climbing. This is a marked park trail, but the nearby paths connect to several other loops, so keep an eye on trail signs at junctions. The separate House of Apache Fires circuit is a different route.

A marked viewpoint sits beside the western part of Apache Fire. Pause for the red-rock hills and the high-desert landscape around them. A bit of trail in the foreground gives the view a sense of scale; keep to the established viewpoint.

Kisva follows the park’s Oak Creek riparian corridor, where greener creekside ground sits alongside the drier hills. Red Rock State Park protects 286 acres, with trails through juniper and manzanita, open meadows and red-rock terrain. This loop is a compact way to see both sides of that landscape without walking the whole trail network.

The House of Apache Fires was built in 1946–47 as Jack and Helen Frye’s retreat on Smoke Trail Ranch. The Fryes bought the ranch in 1941; Jack Frye was president of TWA. The house is a historic landmark, but its interior is not open to visitors. Treat it as a view from the trail, not a place to enter.

Park at Miller Visitor Center and follow the signed trail network to the Apache Fire–Kisva junction; the approach to that junction is outside the one-mile loop distance. The visitor center has restrooms, a park store and picnic ramadas, useful before or after the walk. Park admission is required. Pets are not allowed, and hikers must stay on designated trails.
